FAQ

Answers to frequently asked questions

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy which you may recognize as "cranial" or craniosacral treatment, is a holistic approach with special focus on the complex system of muscles, nerves, circulatory system, bones and fascia. Osteopaths in the US are physicians (DO) who receive special training in body manipulation. You likely have seen a DO in a clinic or hospital. What sets them apart is their holistic approach. They have attended medical school and train alongside MDs in residency and practice all specialties from general medicine to neurosurgery.

Dr A.T. Still (founder of Osteopathy) was an MD who lost many family members to illness in the 1800s in Kansas. He created osteopathy in Kirksville, Missouri, grounded in anatomy, to help the body heal itself.

Is osteopathy suited for babies and children?

Yes, osteopathy is a very gentle and safe approach that enables the body to release stresses and balance itself. Dr Oster has treated babies from in utero (while mommy was pregnant), just after birth and as they grow. It is helpful in reducing the symptoms of a range of childhood conditions and issues such as colic, spitting up, latching difficulties, head shape changes, birth trauma, back pain, athletic injuries, frequent colds, sinus infections to list a few.

What can I expect on the first appointment?

Dr Oster looks at the patient in a holistic way. Having been trained in Internal Medicine, a background in Environmental & Occupational health, Public Health, clinical homeopathy allows her to see the whole patient, their extensive history and their environment. The initial appointment (90 minutes for adults, 60 mins for children) consists of discussing your issue in detail, a physical exam, the treatment, then a discussion to cover recommendations and answer questions you may have.

How should I prepare?

Avoid other treatments on the day of your appointment such as infrared sauna, intense exercise, chiropractic, deep tissue massage, cold plunge. Dr Oster will advise if you should avoid other treatments 2-3 days after your treatment. Drink plenty of water on the day of and days after your treatment. Bring discs of imaging (if you have them) or results/previous records for review.

What should I wear?

Wear something comfortable and loose. Your clothes shouldn't restrict movement and should be relatively light. You may change before/after the appointment in the office if necessary.

Do you accept insurance?

Dr Oster is out of network with all insurance providers. Patients will receive a superbill to submit to their insurance for potential reimbursement. Patients may use their HSA card.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on many factors such as how long the problem has been going on. The longer the issue has been present, the longer it may take. Some patients experience relief in one treatment, others take longer. In general, in 2-3 visits we will know if this is a right fit for you.
